for a millennia, the many descendants of poseidon have lived nomadic lives to avoid disturbance from the human race, moving from place to place, travelling across the seven seas and built kingdoms of their own in the darkest, deepest parts of the ocean. they are called the mermaids, known to many as a mere myth which inhabited regions no human can reach, which to them a safe haven that will remain untouched and undisturbed by humankind. deep down north, a kingdom named cascadia ruled by one of the many sons of triton, urion, lived peacefully with his wives and many children. though unlike other harmless common mermaid species, they are shark-type mermaids which are carnivorous, thus posing as a threat among other vulnerable sea creatures and humans.

the mermaids have a talent in singing, but they're also feared for their magical abilities as well as their tendencies in shifting the weather into benevolent storms to cause shipwrecks. lola, the second youngest daughter out of twelve children of urion, was said to be an excellent hunter, which served her as a great role model for her siblings. they would always go up to the surface to catch sight of the sailing ships across the waters, singing a haunting melody to watch them stray away from their destinations only to be lured away to their direction for them to feast on brutally.

the king would always tell her stories of how mermaids who ascended to the world outside for too long could never return again as their tails will dissipate to be replaced with two limbs they call 'legs'. lola had always been intrigued with the world outside, and found that the life in the ocean was too dark and dull for her adventurous self. intrigued, she went up the surface on her own, where she's met with a fate she could never run away from.

her quest to the surface ended badly when she was unfortunately captured by fishermen who were more than fascinated of their discovery, and planned to sell her off when they sailed back home. knowing that they might be tricked by her singing voice, they immediately covered her up and locked her in the very bottom of the ship, hoping that she would never be able to escape.

just like her father had told her, her tail began to dissipate, and legs slowly formed in place of her original body. it took her a while to get used to it, but by the time she was only able to walk, her captors forcefully took her away when they arrived at the port of incheon. but when her captors found that she no longer has a tail, it raised questions among them, wondering if they'd been hallucinating the whole thing all along or if she's tricking them at the first place. fortunately for lola, one of them decided that it'd be better to let her go when she's of no use of them anymore, and gave her clothes before releasing her, where everything began.

i. it took her only nearly a year to completely get used to her surroundings and how the humans live about their lives to completely blend and fit in. she's met several people (see: plot page) who helped her go along the way into who she is today.

ii. her appetite has changed through her time on the surface - being a 'human' makes her feel morally wrong to eat another; and ironically, she resorted to only eating seafood in turn. with how drastic her diet has changed, she sometimes gets an unexplainable, insatiable lust that she couldn't stop unless she actually take a sip of a human's blood, which she sometimes does by drawing some from her bed partners' body, and hence, her difficulty in committing in one single relationship as not many people liked having their blood drawn out with her claws (being convinced that it's one of her weird kinks).

iii. lola still retains her mystical and psionic powers like telepathy and mind-control using her singing voice, and hydrokinesis. though with her current form she's only limited to telepathy, as using hydrokinesis would easily eat up her energy.

iv. she often has dreams of the deep waters she’d left behind. though slowly, a part of her has begun to forget about her own origins, replaced by false memories of childhood as a human, even though the other half of her is well aware that she wasn't originally one. the only way she can keep herself from forgetting completely is bathing in sea water from time to time, which she's able to do with a quick day trip to the beach every two weeks or so.

v. unbeknownst to herself, there is indeed a way to return to her mermaid form, which urion never told her on purpose. thinking that there's absolutely no way to return, she has lost hope and had never thought of a way to come back.

vi. lola absolutely hates dark rooms, just like she hated the deep, dull darkness in the ocean. she'd have to at least have her room dimly lit for her to feel less stressed out.

vii. she also has a slight need to be spoiled, respected and treated the way she had been when she was a princess. and due to how she naturally makes people around her feel obliged to do so, most would give in to any of her desires (willingly, or by the force of her telepathy).

one of her sisters is sent by urion to search for her and bring her back home, but convincing her is a tough job, especially when she has trouble recognising her own sibling. things actually get messy when she lost the potion that will turn them back to mermaids was lost in the sea, leaving lola with no choice but to take her sister in, stuck on land together with her.

the only time lola fooled around and felt a deep connection with someone, it's a human with aquaphobia. sure, that already in itself is already a dealbreaker in the relationship, but their bond were strong. yet, they parted ways, but when they met again, lola couldn't help being drawn to the person again.

when she first arrived on land, this human male who owns a house on the beach finds lola in a disheveled state only to take her back to their house so they can recover from her illness/injury. the first two years of her life on land, she had nobody she could trust, but this human who apparently had found out about her secret from her odd demeanour took her in and taught her about how the land of humans works.
